WINNING TIP: The Glenuig Inn, Inverness-shire
This inn on the Ardnamurchan peninsula serves food so fresh it slaps you in the face and has simple, classy en suite rooms (from doubles to a six-bed). The landlord doubles as a walking/kayaking guide, so it is easy to fill long summer days and cosy winter nights. You can kayak with basking sharks, walk to deserted villages and watch golden eagles. Kippers from a local smokehouse offer a mouthful of heaven. It is run to the highest eco-friendly standards.

Monsal Head Hotel, Derbyshire
Book a room with a view of the dale: this alone would make the pub a contender for the best in Britain. On our first visit we stopped for a drink in the garden, then couldn't resist the homemade soup.

Gdeanouk
Board Inn, Lealholm, North Yorkshire
This fine pub sits on a bend in the young river Esk. The superb restaurant serves local cuisine. Follow jugged hare with a celebration of rhubarb – crumble, syllabub, jelly and sorbet. Upstairs there's a spacious family room – put the kids to bed then spend the evening sampling the stash of malts.

Excellent pub-with-rooms in a village off the A19 between Easingwold and Thirsk. Food is locally sourced, well-presented and good value. The view from the car park is amazing. Quality bedrooms are in former outbuildings.

The Wenslydale Heifer, West Witton, North Yorkshire
The Chocolate Heaven room has a chocolate version of the Sistine Chapel; the Night at the Movies room has a huge TV and Audrey Hepburn on the wall. This quirky pub in the Yorkshire Dales specialises in themed rooms. Eat in the restaurant or the less formal Fish Bar. And there's a whisky lounge.

The Gin Trap, Ringstead, Norfolk
Few drinkers or diners at this friendly pub near the Norfolk coast realise there are also three traditional en suite bedrooms. In winter we've returned from walks along the beach at Hunstanton to a roaring fire, and in summer we've sat in the garden before a dinner with local specialities like samphire. I like the vegetarian items at breakfast: pancakes with blueberries or French toast with fresh fruit.

Castle Inn, Lydford, Devon
Fab country pub. We stopped for a drink but the warm log fire and the snow falling outside lured us to stay the night. Friendly staff, tasty food in a cosy ambience combined for a lovely spur-of-the-moment night away.

The Mash Tun, Aberlour, Speyside
This amazing pub in the heart of malt country has a great atmosphere, delicious food, comfortable rooms and probably the world's largest selection of Glenfarclas single malts. And it's on the Speyside Way long-distance path, so you can walk to many local distilleries.

The Harp Inn, Old Radnor, Powys
It is worth staying at the Harp, close to the Welsh border, off the A44, for the views alone; superb food and rooms are a bonus. Breakfasts are huge, as befits a famed walking area. After a locally sourced dinner, it's great to relax by one of the log fires before retiring.
